Belgium ended the United States’ FIFA World Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory on Monday to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Charles De Ketelaere scored twice, Hans Vanaken added a third after a costly mistake by the USA goalkeeper, and substitute Romelu Lukaku completed the scoring to set up a quarter-final meeting with Spain.
Much of the build-up to the match centred on Folarin Balogun, who was cleared by FIFA to play after his one match suspension was lifted. However, the striker struggled to make an impact as Belgium controlled most of the game.
Belgium made a bright start, with right-back Timothy Castagne testing USA goalkeeper Matt Freese from long range in less than a minute from kick-off. Freese reacted well to get a hand to the effort and push it behind for a corner.
The European side took the lead in the ninth minute through Charles De Ketelaere. Nicolas Raskin capitalised on a poor clearance from the United States defence before squaring the ball for the striker, who made no mistake from close range.
The United States responded in the 31st minute when Malik Tillman’s free kick took a deflection and found the net to bring the hosts level.
The home side’s celebrations were short-lived, as Belgium regained the lead just two minutes later. De Ketelaere rose highest to head home Leandro Trossard’s cross for his second goal of the match.
Belgium increased their advantage in the 57th minute after an error from goalkeeper Matt Freese. The goalkeeper rushed out of his penalty area to clear the ball but lost possession, allowing Hans Vanaken to score into an empty net.
The co-hosts pushed hard to find a way back into the game but struggled to break down Belgium’s disciplined defence. Substitute Sebastian Berhalter came closest with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area that drifted inches wide of the post, raising hopes around the stadium. Moments later, Folarin Balogun found space inside the box, but his effort at the near post was comfortably dealt with by Thibaut Courtois, as Belgium remained firmly in control.
Another defensive error allowed substitute and Belgium’s all-time leading scorer, Romelu Lukaku, to put the result beyond doubt deep into stoppage time. The veteran striker capitalised on the mistake with a composed finish to seal an emphatic 4-1 victory and send Belgium into the World Cup quarter-finals.
The defeat brought an end to the United States’ hopes of reaching their first FIFA World Cup quarter-final since 2002. It also meant the USA became the last of the three host nations to exit the tournament, with Canada, Mexico, and the United States all bowing out in the Round of 16.
Despite the disappointment, the co-hosts can take great pride in an impressive campaign that rekindled belief in the national team and provided plenty of optimism as they continue to build for the future.
Belgium will now turn their attention to a quarter-final showdown with Spain in Los Angeles on Friday as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever FIFA World Cup title.
