Switzerland booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating Colombia 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in Vancouver on Tuesday.
The final Round of 16 match of the tournament, and the last game to be played outside the United States, produced few clear chances before Switzerland held their nerve in the penalty shoot-out to set up a quarter-final meeting with defending champions Argentina.
Captain James Rodríguez, who started the match, made history by earning his 131st international cap, surpassing David Ospina to become Colombia’s most-capped player of all time.
Both teams were solid in defence throughout the match. Colombia had conceded only one goal in the tournament before kick-off, while Switzerland had also built a strong defensive record.
The first real chance came in the 21st minute when Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced an excellent save to keep out Gustavo Puerta’s curling effort from outside the penalty area.
Switzerland responded well after the first cooling break. Camilo Vargas first pushed away Fabian Rieder’s powerful shot before making another good save to deny Dan Ndoye.
Neither side could find the breakthrough before half-time as both defences remained in control.
Switzerland started the second half brightly, but Colombia also threatened on the counter attack. Luis Suárez had a good opportunity but fired his effort wide of the target.
Both managers made several substitutions during the second half, but clear chances remained limited. Colombia’s star winger Luis Díaz was well contained by the Swiss defence throughout the match.
Ndoye came close to winning it in stoppage time with a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but no teammate was able to apply the finishing touch as the match finished goalless after 90 minutes, becoming the sixth game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to go to extra-time.
The game finally opened up in extra-time. Jhon Lucumí headed against the crossbar from a corner before Kobel produced another fine save to deny Jaminton Campaz as Colombia pushed for a winner.
At the other end, Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas made an excellent save to stop substitute Zeki Amdouni.
Campaz then missed Colombia’s best chance of the match with just five minutes of extra-time remaining, failing to take advantage of a defensive error which left him through on goal with only the keeper to beat.
With neither side able to break the deadlock, the tie was decided by a penalty shoot-out, the fourth of the tournament.
Both teams missed penalties before Switzerland’s Gregor Kobel made the crucial save to deny Cucho Hernández. Rubén Vargas then calmly converted the winning penalty to send Switzerland into the quarter-finals.
Colombia’s World Cup journey came to an end, falling short of matching their historic quarter-final run at Brazil 2014, which remains the nation’s best-ever finish at the tournament.
Switzerland will now face Argentina on Saturday in Kansas City as they look to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history.
