Mbappé (70' pen)
Kylian Mbappé’s second-half penalty was the decider as France booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia.
The match was played in challenging conditions, with temperatures reaching 38°C and extreme weather warnings remaining in place throughout the day. Despite the heat, there were no weather-related delays as the match was played on the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, in the city where the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776.
Before kick-off, fans enjoyed a special opening ceremony featuring performer Idina Menzel singing the Star-Spangled Banner, a performance by hip-hop group The Roots, and a flyover by the US Navy.
Paraguay frustrated the two-time world champions for much of the match, staying organised and making it difficult for France to create clear chances in front of more than 68,000 fans.
The South American side set up with five defenders and sat deep for most of the match, making it difficult for France to find space. They also used a physical and determined approach to break up France’s rhythm whenever possible, yet remarkably finished the game without a single booking.
The tactics frustrated Kylian Mbappé, who became involved in a brief confrontation with Andrés Cubas. A few moments later, Paraguay winger Matías Galarza also clashed with the France captain.
France controlled possession throughout the game but found it difficult to create clear chances, with most of their efforts coming from outside the penalty area.
Manu Koné came close to breaking the deadlock midway through the first half when his shot was deflected just wide. Shortly after the restart, he tested goalkeeper Orlando Gill again, but his effort was pushed over the crossbar.
Paraguay’s disciplined defending continued to frustrate France for much of the match, but it could only get them so far.
France eventually found the breakthrough in the 70th minute after substitute Désiré Doué was brought down inside the penalty area. Mbappé stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick to score the only goal of the game.
It was far from France’s most impressive attacking display of the tournament. They dominated possession throughout the match but Paraguay’s defending prevented Les Bleus from playing with their usual freedom. The South Americans offered very little going forward and did not register a shot on target until the 90th minute.
France has been here before. At the 1998 FIFA World Cup, they also needed a dramatic winner to beat Paraguay in the Round of 16, with Laurent Blanc scoring a famous golden goal in extra time. That victory proved to be a turning point as France went on to lift their first World Cup trophy.
Mbappé continued his outstanding World Cup campaign by scoring his seventh goal of the tournament, drawing level with Lionel Messi as the competition’s joint leading scorer. The Real Madrid forward has also now scored 19 goals in 19 World Cup appearances, leaving him just one behind Lionel Messi’s all-time tournament record of 20.
Despite the nature of their exit, Paraguay will take pride in their three-match unbeaten run after a 4-1 opening defeat to an impressive USA side, beating Turkiye and drawing with Australia before ousting four-time champions Germany.
France will now face Morocco in the quarter-finals after the Atlas Lions secured a 3-0 victory over Canada earlier on Saturday.
