Match Report: Norway 1-2 England (AET)

Jude Bellingham scored twice as England came from behind in Miami to beat Norway 2-1 after extra-time and reach the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Real Madrid midfielder cancelled out Andreas Schjelderup’s first-half opener before scoring the winning goal early in extra-time to send the Three Lions into the last four. England will now face Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday, the 15th of July.

The opening half hour produced very few clear chances before Norway broke the deadlock in the 36th minute. Schjelderup’s cross from the left caught Jordan Pickford by surprise and found its way into the far corner to give the Vikings the lead.

Norway almost doubled their advantage four minutes later when Alexander Sørloth’s powerful volley flew just over the crossbar. Soon afterwards, Martin Ødegaard forced Jordan Pickford into another fine save.

England struggled to create chances for most of the first half but found an equaliser deep into first half stoppage time. Anthony Gordon pulled the ball back to Jude Bellingham, who drove into space before firing a low shot beyond Orjan Nyland to make it 1-1.

Harry Kane thought he had put England ahead moments later after lifting the ball over Nyland, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.

England made two substitutions at half-time, with Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka replacing Declan Rice and Noni Madueke as Thomas Tuchel looked to give his side more energy in attack.

Norway believed they had regained the lead in the 55th minute when Torbjørn Heggem scored from a corner, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review after Erling Haaland was judged to have committed a foul in the build-up.

Ståle Solbakken’s team came within inches of scoring again midway through the second half. Kristoffer Ajer met a corner with a powerful header that struck the crossbar before England managed to clear the danger.

Neither side could find another goal during the remainder of normal time, sending the match into extra-time.

England needed only three minutes to take the lead. Substitute Morgan Rogers’ long-range effort was saved by Nyland, but the goalkeeper could only push the ball back into the path of Bellingham, who reacted quickest to score his second goal of the match. The Real Madrid star has now scored 6 goals in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, putting him level with Harry Kane as England’s top scorer in the tournament.

The Three Lions were then awarded a penalty minutes later after Djed Spence went down in the box, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.

England pushed for a third goal in the closing stages of extra time, but Nyland produced good saves to deny both Spence and Saka.

After the surprise withdrawal of Erling Haaland at the start of the second period of extra time, Norway pushed forward in search of an equaliser. England, however, defended resolutely to hold on for another hard-fought victory and secure their place in the World Cup semi-finals.

Norway’s impressive World Cup campaign came to an end with the defeat, but they leave the tournament with plenty of credit after memorable victories over Brazil and Ivory Coast on their run to the last eight.

The Three Lions are now one win away from reaching their first men’s World Cup final since 1966 after advancing to their third World Cup semi-final since lifting the Jules Rimet Trophy. They will be hoping to end a run of heartbreak when they face Argentina, after defeats to West Germany in 1990 and Croatia in 2018.
