On the 24th of May, 1927, an amateur team linked to the University of Chile was born. From very early on, Club Universidad de Chile stood out for their attacking style of play and their ability to develop talented young players. This allowed “La U” (as they are popularly known) to steadily rise up through the football pyramid, until they made their debut in 1938 in the top division of Chilean football.
Their journey as a club since then has been an exciting one. Club Universidad de Chile have became one of the most successful clubs in the country, winning twenty-seven domestic trophies to date. They also won the Copa Sudamericana in 2011, after beating Liga de Quito 4-0 on aggregate. Furthermore, the club from Santiago have reached the semi-final stage of the Copa Libertadores on four occasions.
Nowadays, La U are considered part of the national identity for many Chileans around the world. The club’s most famous fan group, known as “Los de Abajo,” (the ones below – a reference to where the group began congregating in the home end) is recognised for its fervour and loyalty at every match. With almost 100 years of history, Club Universidad de Chile have become an integral part of Chilean football culture.
