In 1899, Uruguayan football was growing very quickly, but there was a small problem. Most of the teams were made up of foreign players, particularly from England and Germany.
This led a group of young Uruguayans to form their own team, aiming to counteract this influx of foreign players in the sport. On the 14th of May, 1899, in Montevideo, Club Nacional de Football was born.
By 1901, Nacional were playing in the first division, and they have never been relegated from the division in their history. They have enjoyed unparalleled success over the years, amassing one hundred and sixty-three trophies to date.
Among their many honours are forty-nine Uruguayan first division titles and nineteen international trophies, including three Copa Libertadores, three Intercontinental Cups, and two Copa Interamericana trophies.
Nacional have produced many great players for the Uruguayan national team, such as Luis Suárez, Diego Godín, Diego Lugano, and many more. There’s no doubt that they are a great team with a history that is truly admirable and worthy of recognition.
