Barcelona Sporting Club are an Ecuadorian club who were founded in Guayaquil on the 1st of May, 1925. The club’s founder was Eutimio Pérez, a Spanish immigrant who decided to name the club after his home city of Barcelona, Spain.
Since 1957, Barcelona have participated in Serie A, Ecuadorian football’s top division. In 1960, they won their first league title, and since then, they have become the Ecuadorian team with the most national titles. To date, they have won sixteen league titles and finished runners-up thirteen times.
In the Copa Libertadores, they have had notable performances, especially in the 1990s when they reached the final on two occasions (1990 and 1998). Unfortunately, Barcelona lost both finals. The first was against Olimpia from Paraguay, and the second was against Vasco Da Gama from Brazil.
Their local rivals are Emelec, who are from the same Guayaquil neighbourhood. The match between the two sides, called the “Clásico del Astillero” (The Astillero derby), is the most important derby in Ecuadorian football.
Barcelona SC fans, known as “Toreros” (Bullfighters) or “Canarios” (Canaries) due to the team’s traditional yellow kit, fill the stadiums at every match. They are living proof of the importance of Barcelona Sporting Club within Ecuadorian football culture.
