The long lists of potential signings in each position have been whittled down and now it’s a case of watching the main targets in big games.
One of the necessary evils of Pedro’s job is travel, and he spends a lot of time in airports around the world. Let’s look at some of the key vocabulary and phrases that he needs to use and understand.
Terminal
Larger aiports are sometimes split into different terminals. One terminal might be for domestic flights, another for international flights and another for long-haul flights.
- Pedro: Could you tell me which terminal I need for an international flight?
- Shuttle Bus Driver: International flights are in T2, unless it’s a long-haul flight, they’re in T3.
- Pedro: Does this bus go to Terminal 2?
- Shuttle Bus Driver: Yes, we stop at all the terminals.
Check-in
This is where you show your ticket and passport and you can drop off any luggage that will go in the cargo hold during your flight. You will be given your boarding pass, you need this to get on your flight.
- Agent: Can I see your flight ticket and your passport or ID card, please?
- Pedro: Yes, here you go.
- Agent: Is anyone else travelling with you today?
- Pedro: No, I’m travelling alone.
- Agent: OK, I need to ask you some security questions.
- Agent: Did you pack your bags yourself?
- Pedro: Yes, I did.
- Agent: Has anybody asked you to carry anything with you for them?
- Pedro: No, they haven’t.
- Agent: Have you left your luggage unattended at any point since you arrived at the airport?
- Pedro: No, I haven’t.
- Agent: Are you carrying any firearms, flammable materials or any of the other prohibited items on this list?
- Pedro: No, I’m not.
- Agent: Are you checking any luggage today?
- Pedro: Yes, I have one suitcase.
- Agent: OK, please could you place it on the scales for me?
- Agent: And do you have any hand luggage to carry onboard?
- Pedro: Yes, I’ve got this rucksack.
- Agent: OK, please place it here to check it’s within the size and weight restrictions.
- Agent: So this is your boarding pass. You can see your seat number here. Please make your way to Gate 20B, your flight will begin boarding at 17:50.
- Pedro: Thank you very much.
Security
This is where your hand luggage will be scanned. You will also be asked to walk through a metal detector. Some airports also use scanners for passengers instead of metal detectors.
- Airport Security Agent: Please remove your shoes and belt and place them in a tray with your hand luggage.
- Airport Security Agent: You must also remove all electronic devices from your hand luggage and any metal objects and electronic devices from your pockets and place them in the tray.
- Airport Security Agent: Please pass through the metal detector and then wait for your bag on the other side.
Passport Control
You must now go through passport control, showing your passport or ID to the law enforcement officer on duty.
Departure Lounge
Passengers normally wait in the departure lounge nearest to the gate from which their flight will depart. You should keep an eye on the screens in the departure lounge and listen for any announcements, just in case there is a change.
Announcements:
- There has been a gate change for flight RA67 to Amsterdam. The new Boarding Gate is 19A.
- Flight RA67 to Amsterdam has been delayed. The new boarding time will be at 18:25.
- We regret to inform passengers that Flight RA67 to Amsterdam has been cancelled. Will passengers please make their way back to the check-in area where we will provide more information.
The Boarding Gate
The boarding gate is your last stop before getting on your plane. You will have to show your boarding pass and ID and then make your way to your seat on the plane. Have a safe flight!
Announcements:
- Flight RA67 to Amsterdam is now ready for boarding. Will all passengers with seats between 1A and 20F please begin boarding. Please have your boarding cards and ID ready to be checked.
Baggage reclaim
Once you’ve reached your destination and gone through passport control, you can make your way to baggage reclaim to pick up your suitcase.
Customs
When you come out of the baggage reclaim area you will pass through customs. Customs Officials might stop you to check what you have brought in your luggage.
- Customs Official: Good evening, do you have anything to declare?
- Pedro: No, I don’t.
- Customs Official: Do you have any food?
- Pedro: Actually, yes. I have a cheese and tomato sandwich.
- Customs Official: Unfortunately I’ll have to take that, food cannot be brought in from outside the EU.
Arrivals
Once you are in the Arrivals area you will see the rental car company counter. This is where you can sign any necessary docuements and pick up the key for your rental car.
- Pedro: Hi there, I’ve got a car booked under the name Pedro López.
- Rental Car Agent: OK, please could I have your ID and your driving licence?
- Pedro: Sure, here you are.
- Rental Car Agent: OK yes, I have your booking here. You will return it here at the airport before 7pm on Monday. Remember to return it clean and with a full tank of petrol. Please can you sign here and here?
- Pedro: Sure.
- Rental Car Agent: OK, here is the key to your car and here is all the paperwork. This is the number to call for breakdown assistance in case there was a mechanical fault. Your car is over there in our car park in space 46. Enjoy your trip!
