Club Sport Emelec, who are they?

Club Sport Emelec were founded on the 28th of April, 1929, by George Capwell, a sports enthusiast and visionary who left an indelible mark on the country’s sporting landscape. At that time, Capwell was the Superintendent of the Empresa Eléctrica del Ecuador (Electric Company of Ecuador), or EMELEC. Taking advantage of his position, he decided to promote sports within the company by creating a sports institution that would serve as a centre for employees who wanted to participate in various sports, such as swimming, baseball, boxing, basketball, and athletics.

On the 7th of June, 1929, the Emelec football team joined the Guayas Sports Federation. They made their debut in Serie C on the 24th of June, against Gimnástico.

From there, the team rose to become one of the most successful clubs in South America. In 2010 they were named the best club in the world by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), which selected them as the best team of the month in June that year.

To date, Emelec have won 15 national trophies (fourteen first division titles and one second division title). Their best performance in the Copa Libertadores came in 1995 when they reached the semi-finals, coming close to making it to the final.

An important fact is that Emelec are the only Ecuadorian team that have won the first division in every decade in which national championships have been held. This speaks highly of the solid foundations of the club and the effort made to consistently challenge for honours over the years.
